Walmart– Information you need to know

The fact that my sweet hubbie works for Christian radio is such a blessing and lends itself to many informtion that others may not be privy.   Of course I think everyone knows that Walmart has recently decided to welcome back the Salvation Army bell ringers and also to say “Merry Christmas” this year instead of “Happy Holidays”.  This is a good decision.

Walmart has recently started running some ads on the radio station and several people have called in to complain.  I admit, I was a bit surprised when I heard this commercial and called Shane to find out what was going on.  Another perk– I have a direct line :).

Recently, AFA (American Family Association)  has been dogging Walmart for it's support of the Homosexual community.  The most recent information passed along through their email alerts being that Walmart will donate a percentage of their online sales to a Homosexual organization.  AFA made it sound like a percentage of ALL online sales will go to this organiztion, but that is not the case at all.  Keep reading.

Shane did some exploring and found out that the sales manager at Bott had actually spoken to the Vice President of Public Relations at Walmart recently. (Before they decided to run the ads).  You can be sure that can't be an easy feat.  The VP explained that they have 120,000 organizations to which they donate money  through a portal on their website, a portion of the sales goes to the organization.   In theory, any non-profit organization could set this up fairly easily.  Just so happens that a Gay and Lesbian organization set this up as a non-profit group.

So far the amount donated through online purchases to this homosexual organization is less than $5.00.  Yes, you read that right… $5.  Just my opinion, but $5 is nothing to get bent out of shape over!

Now, balance that with 160 overt Christian organizations that have set up the same way.  No, I don't know how much money has been donated here.  But the point is that we cannot be so picky about a company that operates this way.  They are not giving special rights, or denying any group access to this service.  Any non-profit is given this ability.  I'd feel certain that more than $5 has been donated to these 160 organizations.

Walmart has also joined a Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.  IMO, this is a business move.  My preference, would be that they wouldn't have done this, but IMO, it's not something to get worked up over.  It was a business decision.  Many companies join local Chambers– Bott radio included.

According to our source, Walmart does not offer any special privileges to homosexual employees, like insurance to partners.

Walmart is a business.  Some like it, some don't.  I just thought you might like to know the rest of the story before you decide.

  1. Thanks so much for the scoop. I actually love Walmart and this is good to hear. I love their prices and selection as well as their marketing and business saavy. Would love my company to be a household name like Walmart one day!

It was heartening to hear them announce they will be saying Merry Christmas again!

  2. But supposedly a WM vp will serve as an advisor to the NGLCC in helping them promote homosexual marriage. And we have to remember that the NGLCC has a full force effort to abolish the definition of marriage as a union of one man and one woman. Besides giving $25000 to the NGLCC AFA states WM agreed to pay for 2 conferences scheduled by NGLCC. AFA also states that WM has stated they will give homosexual owned businesses special treatment when looking at suppliers.

It is really just a hard call to make. I love Sam’s for their great deals on quality fresh fruit and vegetables. Most of WM’s products are junk or are things I don’t think are appropriate. But, you have families on budgets, too. I have 2 friends though that quit shopping with them entirely and found they saved money each week by NOT shopping with them. We are trying to not go there if at all possible. We don’t have a Costco or much to choose from around here. It has really bugged me that they would throw so much money behind it. I also have a statement from AFA or someone else that a WM official said they are looking into offering benefits to their employees “partners”. I think that if or when WM does that we will know their true motive in all this. IMHO. 🙂
