The fact that my sweet hubbie works for Christian radio is such a blessing and lends itself to many informtion that others may not be privy. Of course I think everyone knows that Walmart has recently decided to welcome back the Salvation Army bell ringers and also to say “Merry Christmas” this year instead of “Happy Holidays”. This is a good decision.
Walmart has recently started running some ads on the radio station and several people have called in to complain. I admit, I was a bit surprised when I heard this commercial and called Shane to find out what was going on. Another perk– I have a direct line :).
Recently, AFA (American Family Association) has been dogging Walmart for it's support of the Homosexual community. The most recent information passed along through their email alerts being that Walmart will donate a percentage of their online sales to a Homosexual organization. AFA made it sound like a percentage of ALL online sales will go to this organiztion, but that is not the case at all. Keep reading.
Shane did some exploring and found out that the sales manager at Bott had actually spoken to the Vice President of Public Relations at Walmart recently. (Before they decided to run the ads). You can be sure that can't be an easy feat. The VP explained that they have 120,000 organizations to which they donate money through a portal on their website, a portion of the sales goes to the organization. In theory, any non-profit organization could set this up fairly easily. Just so happens that a Gay and Lesbian organization set this up as a non-profit group.
So far the amount donated through online purchases to this homosexual organization is less than $5.00. Yes, you read that right… $5. Just my opinion, but $5 is nothing to get bent out of shape over!
Now, balance that with 160 overt Christian organizations that have set up the same way. No, I don't know how much money has been donated here. But the point is that we cannot be so picky about a company that operates this way. They are not giving special rights, or denying any group access to this service. Any non-profit is given this ability. I'd feel certain that more than $5 has been donated to these 160 organizations.
Walmart has also joined a Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. IMO, this is a business move. My preference, would be that they wouldn't have done this, but IMO, it's not something to get worked up over. It was a business decision. Many companies join local Chambers– Bott radio included.
According to our source, Walmart does not offer any special privileges to homosexual employees, like insurance to partners.
Walmart is a business. Some like it, some don't. I just thought you might like to know the rest of the story before you decide.
