Something to be Grasped

Phillipians 2:5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, [1] who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,

but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, [2] being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.  ESV

This word "grasped" has often puzzled me.  Exactly what does that mean?  The KJV uses this word, and the ESV also uses that word.  I think the NIV uses that word also, but not sure.  On second thought, I must have heard this before and it left me somewhere along the way. (I’ve studied through Phil. several times, so I must have heard this before).

This verse makes so much more sense to me now.   The sermon was from this section of text.  The Pastor explained that "grasped" means plundered or stolen.

God did not need to plunder equality with God, because he already had it!  But HE chose to come and humble himself by the worst kind of death–knowing in advance that he would die on a cross.  He chose it, so we could be free from eternal hell.

At the end of time, as we know it, EVERY knee WILL bow! Doesn’t matter if you’re what we call a "strong Christian", a lukewarm Christian, or an Athiest.  Your knee will bow to the Christ, son of the living and true God.  James 2:19 says that Even the demons believe that God is one and they shudder at this.  You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! James 2:19 ESV
